Course Overview

The course will cover current laboratory practices in forensic serology and DNA analysis.

The training is highly hands on, and each trainee will learn to; independently conduct presumptive and confirmatory tests for body fluids, Extract, purify and quantify DNA from a variety of biological materials, Perform PCR, handle and maintain various DNA analysis instruments and interpret DNA data. In addition, the trainees will appreciate the value of maintaining chain of custody and presentation of DNA evidence as expert witnesses.

Course Syllabus

Week 1 - General lab, Serology and DNA analysis

20.06.2022: Operation of general equipment in a molecular laboratory, laboratory bookkeeping, chain of custody, client consenting procedures, sample reception procedures and reference sample collection. Presumptive and confirmatory Test for Blood, Presumptive and confirmatory tests for saliva.

21.06.2022: Presumptive and Confirmatory Test for Semen; Christmas Tree Stain, Microscopy to detect spermatozoa.

22.06.2022: Manual DNA extraction.

23.06.2022: Automated DNA extraction.

24.06.2022: DNA Quantification(qPCR), normalization and PCR amplification.

Week 2 - Statistical interpretation and evidence presentation

27.06.2022: Preparation of reference samples and casework samples (FTA) for Direct PCR, PCR reaction set up.

28.06.2022: Preparation of samples for capillary Electrophoresis/ Fragment analysis.

29.06.2022: Scoring of profiles, interpretation of results and report writing.

30.06.2022: Law of Evidence for forensic experts.

01.07.2022: Recap on the course and Award of certificates.

    This was a very practical and hands-on forensic serology and DNA analysis training course led by highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic course instructors. In addition, this course was comprehensive in its scope and cover of topics which extended from sample reception and chain-of-custody procedures to calculation and interpretation of DNA results, and more. Overall, I found this course to be very useful as a practitioner in the forensic science field.
